| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2024 | 51 "Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant." ~ Author Unknown The Sun Lakes Garden Club has been planting seeds for more than three decades. In fact, Sept. 17 of 2024 will mark our 34th anniversary. Over these three decades we claim responsibility for planting memorial trees in Sun Lakes until landscaping said we don't have room for more. Last year was the 30th anniversary of our participation in the National Forestry Service Plant-A-Tree program. We can take credit for replanting 10K acres of our local national forests over 30 years. Our club recently provided two new cast iron benches to go with the four that we already donated to the Sun Lakes community. We've also provided financial help and/or volunteers to help with beautification efforts in Banning and Beaumont. We're very proud of our many contributions to Sun Lakes and our surrounding communities. Getting a little closer to the here and now, we're also proud to say Linda Vieira is a long-time member of the Garden Club who has provided several exceptional programs at our meetings. In August, she outdid herself with her presentation on edible seaweed. We now know about the many health benefits of this ocean farmed source of nutrition that is consumed extensively around the world. It's also used commercially for organic farming fertilizer, and it may well become a source for medicines. Wow! Thank you, Linda. Going from seaweed to apples, this month we're looking forward to hearing all about apples presented by Devon Riley of Oak Glen's Riley Farms. He will likely tell us about the varieties that grow in the Oak Glen area and when each variety is expected to be harvested. Perfect timing — apple season is here. Guests are always welcome to attend our meetings which are on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom (unless otherwise announced). Dues are only $15 a year.
