September Brings e Fall Autumn Leaves e falling leaves dri by my window e autumn leaves of red and gold I see your lips, the summer kisses e sun-burned hands I used to hold Since you went away, the days grow long And soon I' ll hear old winters song But I miss you most of all, my darling When autumn leaves start to fall Lyrics by Johnny Mercer For those of us who recall the beginning of fall when trees turned golden and their leaves fell to the ground and provided wonderful playgrounds for young children, it was a magical time. We would play among their wondrous piles as we built our make- believe forts and palaces of yore. No cell phones existed, no computer games, nothing but nature itself and our imaginations. Fall had arrived and we were ready for all it had to offer. Fall has always been the great equalizer of the seasons. Now as some of us enter the autumn of our years, our library provides another magical place to discover the wonder of the world around us. Speaking of wonders, I recently stumbled upon an excellent, non-fiction book, e Soul of the Octopus, by Sy Montgomery who is a popular naturalist that explores the emotional and physical world of the octopus, and the remarkable connections that these spirited creatures make with humans. e book opens our eyes to the natural world around us and leaves us with new-found knowledge and compassion for this world. It exposes the reader to four different octopus: Gentle Athena, Assertive Octavia, Curious Kali, and Joyful Karma. e author takes us on a journey that is funny, entertaining, touching, and profound. It teaches us about the meeting of two very different minds, that of the human and that of the octopus. In many ways it is also a love story of a different kind. It reveals what the octopus can teach us about a world we have just begun to explore. e OHCC library was dedicated in 1984 by Alexander Haig who was the former U.S. Secretary of State and served as a Leisure Technology Board Member. Money was scarce, therefore, only five books were purchased that were best sellers. at same year, the first Holiday boutique raised $1,800, and Leisure Technology donated another $1,000 to purchase books. At that time, there were only seven volunteers who took care of the library, and it was open only on Wednesdays from 10 am to noon. One has only to look at where we are today to realize how far our Library has come since 1984. "A book is a garden carried in the pocket."
