16 | THE COLONY NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2024 | By Sharon Boll Did you know that some Marines at Camp Pendleton will be spending their first-ever Thanksgiving away from home this year? Did you also know that you could help them out? If you are planning on preparing your Thanksgiving meal at home this November, it would be a great idea to welcome a young Marine from Camp Pendleton to share in the festivities! They are always grateful to have the day off base and to share a home- cooked meal. We are looking for families to host at least one or more Marines on Thanksgiving Day. The Colony will send a bus to pick up 56 Marines from the base on Thanksgiving. Meet your Marine(s) at The Colony Clubhouse about 10 am and treat your guest(s) to a wonderful Thanksgiving. The bus leaves The Colony at 3 pm and will take the group back to the base. Think about it — you could make a big difference to someone away from home for the first time. What special memories you could make! For more information, or to serve as a host, contact Sharon Boll at 951-399-8271 or Denise Sturm at 949-632-6552. We appreciate you! Thanksgiving with a Marine Congratulations Colony residents! You've done it again. I put out a call for ball gowns for Marines and Navy spouses at Camp Pendleton for use as they celebrate the Navy Ball in October and the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in November. You kindly gave me enough to fill my car three times and to make an impact at the Ball Gown Giveaway this September. Working with the Armed Forces YMCA on the base, we collected many of your beautiful dresses, purses, shoes and suits. And you also provided a few tuxes, accessories, jewelry, and wraps. Some of the items were new and still had a price tag. Again, I pass along my thanks from the YMCA at Camp Pendleton. And, if you missed it this year, please put your finery in the back of your closet for me next year. The Y is unable to accept and store items after Sept. 1 since the Ballgown Giveaway is that week. Just after the giveaway, they close that event. Then Toys for Tots collections begin. More about that next month. Look for the article from the Elf!
