| LIFE IN SOLERA | SEPTEMBER 2024 | 11 By Richard Crowe Climbing Clematis Vines Within reason, I like the idea of plants crawling over other plants to give a somewhat natural appearing yard. In nature, especially forests, there can be many layers of plants, some of which are vines that crawl over shrubs and into trees and do not harm the plants being crawled upon. Clematis vines are colorful and easily achieve the effect I speak to here. Check out your yard for possible situations and then go online and check out all the kinds of Clematis vines available: some grow just a few feet and some 20 or 30 feet. Cherry Valley Nursery carries a few varieties and can special order more. At right are a few examples. Clockwise from top right: • Red Clematis and a climbing mini-rose grow into a Redbud Tree • Red-Purple Clematis on scoreboard • Purple Clematis in Apple Tree • Pink Clematis all over the Apricot Tree
