We will be showing e Great Zieg feld, the 1937 Academy Awards Best Picture, on Sept. 26 and Oct. 1 at 6 pm in The Lodge Theater. This is a lavish biography of Flo Ziegfeld, the producer who became Broadway's biggest star maker. This movie was one of the biggest successes in film in the 1930s and the pride of MGM. It was acclaimed as the greatest musical biography to be made in Hollywood and still remains a standard in musical film making. It won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture for producer Hunt Stromberg, Best Actress for Luise Rainer, and Best Dance Direction for Seymour Felix, and was nominated for four others. It stars William Powell as Ziegfeld, Myrna Loy as Billie Burke, and Luise Rainer as Anna Held. Robert Z. Leonard directed the film, which was written by William Anthony McGuire and shot at Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer studios in Culver City. Wednesday's Western Matinee is Winds Of e Wasteland starring John Wayne. At a time when the Pony Express' days are numbered, two rival stagecoach companies vie for the government contract. Cowboys John Blair (John Wayne) and Larry Adams (Lane Chandler) hastily purchase a stagecoach line operating out of Crescent City, Calif., unaware that the place is essentially a ghost town. Join us for this screening on Sept. 11 at 2 pm in The Lodge Theater. ~ Paul Plamondon, 4seasonsmoviegroup@ gmail.com The Cinema Club has screenings on the second Sunday of each month. We screen films you won't find at the big cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films, and other little gems that don't get wide release. Our screening for this month, on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 6 pm, is Frida (USA 2024, 1 hr.27 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "A raw and magical journey into the life of iconic artist Frida Kahlo, told through her own words from diaries, letters, essays, and interviews. Her story is vividly brought to life with lyrical animation inspired by her unforgettable artwork." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theater has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability.
