Rated PG-13 By Clare Mendez, Resident Just like Christmas, the Easter Bunny, and your wedding anniversary, OLDlympics only comes around once a year. I'm telling you this so you don't miss out on some great fun that spans neighborhoods throughout the San Jacinto Valley. To quote their flyer, "OLDlympics was created to provide an opportunity for seniors in our community to compete against their peers in regulated events that are traditional, relaxed, and informative." I'll add to this by saying, you don't have to be athletic or play sports, although there are several to choose from. Games such as Bingo, Billiards, Cribbage, Poker, Scrabble, and more, are offered too. Once all 19 events are over and winners are established, there's an awards banquet where first, second, and third place winners receive their medals and bragging rights. Don't let the name fool you. Anyone over the age of 50 can participate, and I'm quite sure we don't think 50 is "old." When it comes to the athletic competitions they offer, your age will place you in a competitive bracket. For information or to sign up, call the Valley-Wide Recreation & Park District at (951) 927-6673 or (951) 487-9234, or ask your friends about it. Several SDV residents participate every year.
