42 | LIFE IN SOLERA | OCTOBER 2024 | It's October and temperatures are starting to cool off. People will be playing Pickleball Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays starting around 7:30 am. We would like to invite you to come join us and get to know our friendly group of Pickleball paddlers. One such friendly person (pictured below) is Chris Hubbs (or SLAMMY as we call him) who shared this information with me recently. "I was an independent contractor in the early 90s with my shutter installation company. en I became the California regional installation manager for Danmer Shutters for 23 years. For the last six years, I have been the in-home sales designer for Home Depot stores in Orange County. "Martha, my beautiful wife, and myself met 17 years ago and lived in Downey and Whittier. We moved to Solera in July 2022. Martha started playing and told me how much fun it was. I was still working so I only played on Saturdays. I have been playing three times a week, lately. "e players are so much fun and I've made lots of friends. As I am able to play more, we have also been playing at Oak Glen and Noble Park. But Solera is still the best! "Aer a few times playing, the rules got easier to understand. So now, when we play, I only need to ask who is serving, the score and if I am a one or two. Ha ha, showing my age. "e kitchen rules, may be the hardest to learn. In simple terms, you can't hit the ball until it bounces if you are standing in the kitchen. I try to stand at the kitchen line when I hit volleys. One of the shots I have done a few times is called an Ernie. It occurs when your opponent hits a cross court shot to the sideline and you step outside the court and hit the ball around the outside of the net post and it lands inside the opponent's court." If you want to start playing Pickleball, just show up; we have extra paddles for you to borrow. Just wear court tennis shoes and bring plenty of water. Everyone there is supportive and will help you understand the game. If you need more information, please call or text Sandy Stearn at (717) 542-0481 or me, George Dietz, at (614) 940-9506. Remember, no ball is worth the fall! Paddles up and see you on the court. PICKLEBALL PADDLERS Jim Hickey, Chris and Martha Hubbs, and Rhonda Hickey
