It has been a fairly quiet summer for us wilted Bloomers, choosing carefully our time spent outside. Hopefully the onset of fall will bring cooler temperatures and fun ideas for our gardens. We hope you all weathered the heat and are looking forward to a healthy, happy holiday season. e ocial last trip of summer took place on Aug. 12 with a group of travelers headed south. eir rst stop was Balboa Park with high hopes of visiting several gardens within the park. Once there they embarked on so many dierent varieties of ora and fauna in the Japanese Garden they didn't make it to the others. It was unanimous that we need a do-over in order to take in more of such a beautiful location. Second stop was lunch at one of San Diego's most recognized architectural landmarks, Tom Ham's Lighthouse on Harbor Island. Initially inspired by a walk along Shelter Island, Tom was awestruck by the charm of a functioning beacon along his future property. Constructed in 1971, Tom brought his dream vision to reality by infusing his love of California history and adventure into the design of his restaurant, shaping it in the form of the state itself and incorporating Beacon #9 into the design with his very own fog bell. Tom passed away in 1973 but his vision and his legacy live on through his family continuing to preserve this jewel of excellent dining, exceptional service and unforgettable experiences. If you're ever in the area both of these San Diego landmarks are well worth your time to visit and to linger. Rich in California history, you will not be disappointed. www.balboapark.org and www.tomhamslighthouse.com Our meeting in October will be Mon., Oct. 14 at 1 pm in the Arts & Cras Room. All Four Seasons residents are welcome to attend meetings and trips. Sharing gardening tips, traveling together, learning from each other, and cultivating forever friendships are the blooms growing in our gardens. Late Bloomers meets every second Monday of the month at 1 pm in the Arts & Cras Room, unless we meet o-site for unique excursions.
