is Is October My beloved October has returned, With its brilliant colors, cool temperatures and sunny, cloudless, azure skies. I must enjoy it before it escapes for another year. -Peggy Toney Horton October is famous for many things. The world's largest Beer Festival, Octoberfest, is celebrated in Germany. It attracts more than six million visitors who collectively consume over seven million liters of beer. That's a lot of beer! France bestowed upon the US the famous Statue of Liberty in October of 1886. All of us recognize the most lucrative holidays in America, Halloween, on October 31st. It takes its origin from the Eve of All Hallows' Day when spirits can roam the earth freely. As a result, people young and old wear costumes and disguises to mark the occasion. "World Smile Day" is observed on the first Friday of every October encouraging people to perform small acts of kindness, spread positivity and joy to those around us, and make the world a happier place. One of those happy places is our own library at OHCC. The "Afternoon with Authors" series will be back soon with special guest, Pete McCall author of Smarter Recovery, A Practical Guide to Maximizing Training Results and Ageless Intensity. He emphasizes effective workouts to slow the aging process. Pete has produced education solutions for a variety of health and fitness organizations including, the American Council of Exercise, the National Academy of Sports Medicine and Reebok, and 24-hour Fitness and Core Health based in Vista. He holds a master's degree in exercise science and health promotion. He has spent a large part of his career educating personal trainers around the world. In addition to his books, Pete has authored numerous articles for fitness and written textbook chapters for the two largest fitness certification organizations. He believes that successful aging is the process of aging free from disease while maintaining high levels of physical and cognitive performance. From his presentation you will learn how high intensity exercise can be the 'proverbial fountain of youth' for adults of all ages, and especially for those in the later years of life. You won't want to miss this one! Watch for the upcoming time and date in Library News. *Special Note: If you are looking for non-fiction, autobiographies, biographies, and memoirs, they have been located behind the counter next to the Patterson books. Paperback books that fit the criteria are housed there, too. They have a light blue dot and the red non-fiction dot.
