Art Lovers Once again, our world travelers, Susan and Ernie Pick have enthralled the Art Lovers members with their colorful, vivid presentation of their recent trip to Europe. Their trip included visits to The Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland. In Amsterdam they enjoyed seeing the 700-year-old historic city, 16th century warehouses, the Jewish quarter, charming churches and striking bell towers while cruising the canals in glass topped boats. For seven days the couple cruised the legendary Rhine River. On the way to Cologne, one of Germany's largest cities, they toured Koblenz and viewed the dramatic Marksburg Castle and Strasbourg. In Strasbourg, one of the finest astronomical clocks in existence is housed in a stunning Gothic Cathedral. After the cruise, Susan and Ernie flew to Basel, Switzerland where they enjoyed an extensive military parade, the Art Museum with pieces by Max Bill and Josef Albers and the architecture of the Paul Klee Museum. The Town Hall's façade is an intricately decorated pastel color with paintings on its walls. The Jean Tinquely kinetic fountain was a joy to watch. In Bern, the capital of Switzerland, the Pick's favorite sights were the 15th century astronomical clock and the Rose Garden. From the Rosengarten one sees a panoramic view of the medieval town center. The Rosarium was converted from a park in 1913. In Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland, our travelers visited the huge art museum, Kunsthaus Zurich, made up of two buildings and is the biggest art museum in Switzerland. It houses art works from the Middle Ages to contemporary art, including art by Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Jacques Lipchitz and Alberto Giacometti. There is also an Auguste Rodin's sculpture, The Gates of Hell. It was a pleasure to see and hear about Susan and Ernie Pick's European trip. We look forward to learning about their next adventure. Our Holiday Luncheon will be coming up soon. So watch for the details.
