| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2024 | 29 Gardening is a hobby we should enjoy our whole life, but as we age, some of the physical aspects of gardening become more challenging. At the OHCC Garden Club October meeting, the topic will be Accessibility in the Garden, where you can learn many ways to minimize some of the physical challenges of gardening. Our speaker is Stephen Cantu, a Master Gardener since 2008, a Journeyman Carpenter and wheelchair athlete. He has taken his experience as a gardener and a wheelchair user to develop a program called FIG, Friendly Inclusive Gardens, where he believes in the idea of a cradle to grave garden that can be accessed by everyone from toddlers to great-grandparents. We're looking forward to an informative and inspiring presentation. The Oct. 9 meeting will be held in Abravanel Hall, refreshments and social time is 9:30 am and the meeting begins at 10 am. If you have any excess plants or cuttings to share, please leave them at the table at the side entrance, feel free to take what you need. Upcoming dates to remember… Oct. 19: Fall Festival and Garden Club Hot Dog Fundraiser Oct. 26: Workshop-Pumpkin Decorating with Succulents (members only) Dec. 11: Holiday Luncheon. Come to our October meeting to find out all the details. Written by Jan Vaccaro Garden Club The Genealogy Interest Group is a growing group of individuals who want to find out about their heritage and their ancestry. Curiosity about those who came before and formed us is important. The group provides tools to do your research and help in getting started. For the experienced we can offer suggestions to break through the brick walls of past generations. Meeting with others looking in the same geographical areas is a great help. We have both Apple computers and PCs in the computer room. It is helpful if you want to bring your own laptop. We will meet for Help Sessions on Sat., Oct. 5 and Fri., Oct. 25. Newcomers are welcome. All sessions can be seen on the TAG calendar. We are happy to offer the World Explorer version of Ancestry.com free of charge in the computer room. This program would cost an individual over $100 a month. We also offer the Family Tree Maker on several of the computers in the lab. A family tree can be started and compiled with either or both of these programs with many hints to assist in your research. Coordinators are Dorothy Miller, Shirley Rock and Peggy Singh. In 2021, PLC members decided to donate gifts for those clients who seldom can afford gifts for their pets and may have no family. We paired up with our local MoW who collected "Wish Lists" from pet parents. They are collecting the wish lists which will be available around mid-October. Presents can be brought to Ellen Kippel's house at 4909 Tilos prior to Nov. 9. These events over the past three years were so rewarding for everyone and the MoW Director said they had always wanted to do something like this but didn't know quite how to go about it. Sometimes the need is for a bigger item or a pet service, and money from checks made out to OHCC PLC will be used to make those purchases including gift cards to either PetSmart of Petco. We will be providing each client with gifts worth at least $50 in requested pet items or gift cards. All pet lovers are invited to participate, whether members and non-members. During our annual meeting Nov. 9, from 9 am to 12 pm in the Lamia room, we will have election of officers for two years from January 1, 2025, till December 31, 2026. The current officers (Ellen Kippel, president, Mitchie Adams, vice president, Karen Hasting, Secretary, Elizabeth Westwater, treasurer) have agreed to run for another two years. Nominations will be accepted from the floor at the meeting. We will also have a vote on the charities that the PLC will support for 2024. Light refreshments will be served. At the Nov. 9 meeting members can also bring their Pet Presents. Also, Maria McSweeney is collecting cards and calendars for the Meals on Wheels program. If you want to donate cards and calendars you can leave them at the Clubhouse front desk marked for Maria McSweeney or you can text, her at (312) 502-2027 or email at mjmread@aol.com and she can pick them up. She does this year-round, and during the holidays, these items are added to the gift bags for "Presents for Pets." This program has been very much appreciated by the MoW clients. ~ Ellen Kippel, President, OHCC Pet Lovers Club, (714) 893-7621 (cell)
