32 | OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2024 | Village Vets Fall is here ladies and gentlemen and that means your Veteran's Club is busy. First up was our recent trip to the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad. What a joy it was to walk the academy grounds, meet and talk with cadets, teachers, and staff, and to chow down in their dining hall. Huge thanks to the Tour Director and retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Mike Welch for putting our trip together! Next up is our Oct. 24 General Meeting starting at 3 pm (1500) in Abravanel Hall. Our featured speaker is 1st LT Jerry "Cookie" Camp, Deputy Commander Fallbrook Squadron 87, Civil Air Patrol, and a 30+ year law enforcement officer. Cookie will tell us how he got his call sign but will also talk about how he converted a surplus military helicopter for use in fighting wildfires. Of course, refreshments will be served. We will conduct our annual officer elections. Want to take a more active role in your club? Please contact elections chair, David Hef ler at (909) 568-5353, about open officer and director positions. In November, the big event is Veterans Day. Veterans Day Ocean Hills is conducted on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Translation: please gather your friends and neighbors and come down to Abravanel Hall on November 11th at 11 am to celebrate our veterans and their families. Reception to follow in the new Lanai. This is an ALL-HANDS event! Our theme this year is Remembering the Heroes of D-Day: Courage Across Generations. 2024 concludes with another ALL-HANDS event, our annual holiday party! Set for Dec. 7 in venerable Abravanel Hall, please join active-duty sailors from Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton for a holiday feast followed by a night of camaraderie and dancing to the Music Station. Due to the hard work of party chairs, Rosilyn Nesler, Patty Coffey, and Marta Welch, we were able to hold our costs down. Ticket prices are the same as last year at $45 for each member and $50 for guests. We are also looking for donations to help our active- duty guests. Please contact Ros, Patty, or Marta for additional donation details. See you at these events and around the Village! P.S. Our final Diaper Drive tally was 359 boxes of diapers and 25 boxes of wipes. Thanks to all who contributed! Bob Bechill, Commander, Ocean Hills Village Vets, (209) 663-5088 Club W "We generate fears while we sit. We overcome them by action." Dr. Henry Link If you've recently lost your spouse, understanding the stages of grief can help you approach the mourning process with a stronger sense of compassion for yourself. You should know what grief looks like, and what steps you can take to accept widowhood while maintaining your mental health. Widowers may experience a range of emotions and challenges while grieving. Feeling like you lost an arm or organ, fear of dying alone, pressure from family, social exclusion, emotional suppression, and health complications. Some ways widowers cope with their grief include: Connecting with other widowers or widows: Find support in support groups or by connecting with other widowers. Also, finding a safe place to worship: Widowers may find comfort in a faith community. Widowers may find comfort in documenting their memories and in taking care of themselves, such as eating meals and participating in activities they enjoy. Allowing themselves to feel emotions: Widowers may feel comfortable feeling without self-judgment. Club W has access to a supportive peer community that will provide the understanding, encouragement, and support needed to rebuild your life. Our programs and events are designed specifically for you. We serve individuals with love and a sense of hope for the future. Our nominating committee is currently working to fill the 2025 Executive Board. If you want to serve with a great group of friends, please contact Alice Robeson at alicerobeson@cox.net. We need a new President, vice president, and secretary, and if we can't fill the open positions, we may have to close our club. We meet on the third Saturday of the month at 10 am for a social gathering in Abravanel Hall. Coffee, excellent speakers, and programs are provided. Membership is $10/year.
