| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2024 | 41 Racquet Club The pace of Racquet Club activities purposely slowed during the summer heat, but Bob James and his team ramped it up with three significant events to welcome the fall. September served again as the Racquet Club's Team Cornhole Competition with 10 teams competing Wednesday afternoons on the croquet lawn. Did the Baggin Bombshells overcome their first week's blues to give the Corn Dogs a fright? Did Better Than Most show up the Slingers? Check here next issue to find out who ended up with Baggin' & Braggin' rights. A "special event" – by invitation – was held in September to thank the more than 175 members who make everything the Club does succeed as if by magic. Guests literally walked the red carpet to enter the Lanai Happy Hour featuring roaming saxophonist Brian Pierini. Former chef and RC member Gary Warmuth whipped up a sumptuous array of small plate appetizers to complement the wine and beer offerings. Great evening on the Lanai! Why are volunteers so critical to our success? Check out some examples. Gary Forsberg, Sue Bixler, and Sandy Reinhardt make sure that pickleballs are in the tubes at all venues. Greg Smith and Bill McGrath, both part-time residents – set up tennis mixers to encourage more tennis play. Behind-the-scenes guy David Johnson manages the Skedda reservation system, is our go-to guy for court scheduling solutions, and staffs the Help Desk. Patti Smith, Dannica Wood, and Tim Giffith snap photos for the website. Celia and Jim Quinn are always ready with helping hands no matter what the occasion. Casey Shoenhard and Jeannine Ferrari offer ball machine training for residents. Rob Schoonover zip ties the pickleball nets regularly so balls can freely roll underneath. Mike Hoggatt has never once turned down a request to teach yet another of our free beginner pickleball classes. Walt Kriewald brings his blower to the courts on Sunday mornings to make sure the Clubhouse courts are safe for play. There are more examples… and we'll more regularly broadcast how individuals helping in small and large ways make it such a joy to be a member. The Sept. 26 pickleball tournament recognized two super volunteers – Herb & Gerry Livsey – whose efforts to build a strong pickleball culture at OHCC have been remarkable. Their fierce determination to create a thriving pickleball program played on quality courts was celebrated at the 2024 Inspiration Games, aka Mixed Doubles Tournament. More on that next month.
