| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2024 | 51 "A garden is not a place, it's a journey." ~Monty Don As we journeyed into the fall and apple season in Oak Glen, our September meeting hosted Devon Riley of Oak Glen's Riley Farms. He presented an informative program about the apple varieties grown in Oak Glen and when each variety is expected to be harvested. September was, of course, the time to start autumn gardening efforts to get a winter garden going or prep for spring planting, so last month the Garden Club's own Garden of Eat-em Guy, Pat Pennington, provided lots of insight on how to go about it. He also reviewed how to start a hanging vegetable garden for those who missed it in August. If you need plants and supplies for your gardening journey, may we suggest you go to the experts at Cherry Valley Nursery. For more than 25 years the nursery has provided the Garden Club with all manner of support, and every month for those 25 years they have generously donated plants for our meeting's door prize drawings. From fruit and veggies last month to f lowers this month, specifically Irises. On Wed., Oct. 9, the featured speaker, Anne Michaelson from the California Iris Society, will tell us when to plant, where to plant, soil prep, how deep to plant, distance apart, fertilization, and when to thin, and more. Looking ahead to the Craft Fair on Nov. 1 and 2, the Garden Club will be selling Laymon's candies in the hall outside the Ballroom. Never fear, we still love our See's Candies events; See's sales will begin in December for the holidays. And, YES! we are already planning for the Holiday Luncheon, Wed., Dec. 11. We will have a Poinsettia theme and Raphael from Cherry Valley Nursery will be there to tell us how to keep them alive for next year. Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings which are on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom (unless otherwise announced). Dues are only $15 a year.
