| THE COLONY NEWS | OCTOBER 2024 | 33 The Colony Cousins Genealogy Club welcomes you to our Tuesday, Oct. 8, meeting at 1 pm in the Annex, where our guest speaker, Laurice Johnson, will present "Leaving a Legacy." It's true. None of us live forever. What will happen to the decades of research you leave behind? What about your online tree? Who will take that over? And don't forget about your DNA, or all those files — the ones you inherited — and the photos you have taken over the years? Do you have a plan? You should! Laurice will discuss these things and give suggestions about leaving instructions for how you want your family history distributed. Laurice grew up listening to stories about her ancestors. Her parents were active genealogical researchers for many years. She knew all about her great-grandparents and their grandparents. After her son was born and she was filling out the family tree in his baby book, she asked her husband what his grandmother's name was. Imagine her surprise when he responded with a blank look and "Grandma Schutt?" – and knew nothing else about her. That was over 40 years ago. She has been actively researching since then. Currently, Laurice is education director of her genealogy society in Temecula. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Her greatest joy comes from spending time with her first grand-baby, Lorelei Anne. In her spare time, she continues to search for her elusive ancestors and helps others find theirs, too. Our meeting will start promptly at 1 pm so please plan to sign in at 12:45. For questions, please contact Lennie Martin at (503) 269- 9987 or lenniem07@yahoo.com. Our new member drive continues, and we invite you to join us. Dues for 2024 are $25 for an individual and $30 for a family. Contact Greg Griffes at mosesscrolls@gmail.com for a membership form. If you would like copies of the handouts for past presentations, please contact John Murphy at jemurphy77@yahoo.com or 951-764-2392. Genealogy By Greg Gries, 951-383-9988 October's Singles dinner in the Auditorium will be Monday, Oct.14, at 5 pm. Colony Singles By Jan Foster Colony Chorus By Ken Luekens Chorus rehearsals for our Christmas program began Thursday, Sept. 5. Even if you missed the earlier ones, it is not too late to join us. We practice every Thursday morning from 9 to 11:15 am. This season, Lorilee Bajema, our talented director, takes us to A Celtic Christmas, which means most of our songs have an Irish, Scottish Gaelic, or Welsh background (no accent is required). Our Christmas concert will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7 pm, and Sunday, Dec.8, at 3 pm. Mark your calendars now. Ticket sales will start mid-October. Tickets may be purchased from any chorus member. This past spring both concerts sold out (thank you for your support). So be ready. Would you like to show extra support for The Colony Chorus? Consider becoming a Patron. The Chorus truly appreciates our Patrons, and many have supported us for years. As a Patron, you'll enjoy the benefit of a reserved seat in the front. Get in touch with Dee March at 760-271-9002 or Julie Benningfield at 520-975-0224 for more information. If you enjoy singing, the Chorus is a great way to exercise your voice and make friends while together we prepare a delightful program for the holidays. No audition required. Just be there on Thursdays at 9 am in the Auditorium. I hope to see you there.
