| OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2024 | 37 Imagine competing in a tournament with a partner you did not know. That's what our intrepid competitors faced in our Team 8-Ball event. Our Artificial Intelligence Device (one of our trusty pill bottles) assigned partners. Team players trade shots, so if you do not already know your assigned partner, you'll get to know them as you discuss how to play each shot to leave the next player in a good position. It's a good chance for less experienced players to see how "old pros" approach the game. In the first semi-final, David Key and Jan Demont defeated Charlie Payne and Joan Comito. In the other semi-final, Leo Beeloo and Gary Pelcher overcame Don Farmer and Hazel Bobach. None of these shooters had previously played with their partner, so they were all adjusting as they went. The final then saw David/Jan take on Leo/Gary. After many shots and much conversation, Leo/Gary won the tournament. Charlie/ Joan defeated Don/Hazel for third place. Leo and Gary will have their names immortalized on a bronze plaque on our Wall of Fame, and David and Jan will receive the great satisfaction of almost winning. Then there's the money. The winners received $50, which is $25 per person. The second-place team got $10 per person, and the third-place team got $5 each. All six will enjoy 15 seconds of fame when their picture appears right here in our OHCC Living magazine. What a great opportunity to lord it over those who prophesied 50 years ago, "You'll never amount to anything." Money or not, everyone had fun meeting and playing with new people. You can too! See below. The Billiard Club will not have events in November or December; too much going on during the holiday season. But go ahead and fork over $7 to sign up for 2025 so you can begin the new year with our series of four "How-To" lessons. These are essential for new players and helpful for everyone. Written by Charlie Payne Billiards Mahjongg Club The OHCC Mahjongg Club held the fall meeting and Social on Oct. 18 in the Lanai. Our club has four socials in a calendar year where members have fun with one another and (occasionally) compete for prizes. As we enter the fourth quarter of the first full year in existence, the club has topped 130 members. There are a lot of residents in OHCC that love playing Mahjongg. For the fall social, refreshments and snacks were available courtesy of Mahjongg club members. The club members brought their Mahjongg sets and were grouped by choice at each game table. It was a relaxed setting with the table rules decided amongst the players at each table. The scoring method and time allotted to a play a game was self-determined. This very casual atmosphere enabled members to play a little and then eat a little. (And repeat at their leisure.) What could be more fun? Thanks to the members for providing the sets, the snacks, refreshments, and good cheer. And many thanks to the social committee for providing a wonderful afternoon: Jacqueline Ettinger, Christi Abshier, Janeen Sheelen, and Rubina Martinez. Reminder that "open play" continues in the Majorca Room which is reserved from 1 to 4 pm every Saturday. No reservation required. Mahj On! Written by Dawn Edwards
