It seems that scams ramp up as we approach the holidays. Below
are some scams targeting at-risk populations, including older
adults, people with disabilities, and those facing financial hardships,
which often rely on emotional manipulation, urgency, and the
impersonation of authority figures.
Medicare and Health Insurance Scams
Scammers pretend to be Medicare representatives to get personal
information or demand payment for non-existent services. They
promise "free" equipment or discounted prescriptions to gather
insurance and identity details.
Imposter Scams
Scammers pretend to be a distressed grandchild in need of
emergency funds. They may call you and put someone on the line
demanding some sort of payment for an emergency. Criminals pose
as IRS agents, Social Security representatives, or other authorities to
claim the victim owes money, threatening legal action if you don't
pay immediately.
Home Repair and Contractor Scams
Scammers show up at victims' homes, offering repair services for a
low price. After receiving an advance payment, they perform shoddy
work or disappear entirely.
Reverse Mortgage and Real Estate Scams
Scammers offer phony reverse mortgage schemes or home equity
theft, tricking victims into signing away homeownership and/or take
money for deposits.
These scams exploit trust, fear, or urgency. We hope that you
recognize the red flags, verify identities, and never share personal
information unless you are sure of who you're talking to. Doing so
can go a long way to preventing victimization.
