| OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2024 | 41 Racquet Club With 2024 winding down, the Racquet Club Board is busy finalizing the 2025 calendar of events. Plenty more fun ahead for all our members to enjoy! And even if you don't play racquet sports, there's something for everyone. Come join in to meet some wonderful people, enjoy our beautiful San Diego weather and get that heart pumping! Membership dues are just $15. Feel like joining the fun and learning a little pickleball? The Racquet Club's free lessons for beginners are open to OHCC residents and include four sessions taught by our experienced pickleball- playing volunteers. Most recently, Celia Quinn and Daniel Sansoni provided instruction. Once you've gotten some playing experience after taking initial lessons and are ready for the next step, our new series of "novice" lessons may be for you. This class is developed by Herb Livsey and the team will be offered periodically throughout the year. You might also consider this if you've been away from the courts for a while and need a refresher. Herb's highly rated Team Camps with their emphasis on learning to play with a consistent partner will resume after the first of the year. Linda Brems earned "Most Improved" recognition from the fall session staff for her success incorporating the strategies into her on-court play. And, for those who are skilled players and want to up their game, sign up for the Pro Series clinics aimed at upper-intermediate and higher players. These are taught by professionally certified coaches and are generally small groups of eight players. There's a modest fee for these clinics which fill up quickly, so get your name in early when the email announcement comes out. Racquet Club Vocabulary Word of the Month: Dink. No, it is not something you do during Happy Hour – although you could! Dink is a verb meaning a soft and controlled shot intended to move downward shortly after it clears the net, landing in the Kitchen. The what?? The Kitchen. Look for that vocabulary word next time. Wednesday late afternoon bocce starts at 3 pm and enjoy a hot toddy or another beverage with all the players after the games. I hope to see you there. A big thank you to Tom Murphy of the Woodchucks for a great redesign of the bocce ball lifters. We recently received six. If you need a lifter to ease your bocce playing, send an email to BocceClub.OceanHills@gmail.com. The lifter is free and we ask that you return it when you no longer are using it. They are numbered and assigned so if you forget to take it home with you, we can get it back to you quickly. Do Dues Day is Jan. 11. Dues are $12 per person. If you can't make it to Do Dues Day, drop off you check anytime at the front desk in the Clubhouse. In addition to a table in the Hall, you can also go to the bocce courts where members will help you learn the game. To get a head start on planning for next year, here are the key Bocce Club dates for 2025: Quarterly meetings at 5:30 pm on 1/16, 4/17, 7/17 and 10/23. Tournaments in the morning during the weeks of 4/14 and 10/6. Sunday BBQs are 5/18, 6/19, 7/20, 8/17, 9/21 and 10/19. Members will receive f lyers with details and times the month before the event.
