Were getting ready to enjoy more fun at our Christmas party. We all learned new things from demos we've done. Fabric and lots of sewing items were donated to us to share. Sun Lakes Quilters Art League Happy Holidays from the Art League! Tis' the season of celebration: Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza. Second century earliest church records mention Christmas (shortened from Christ's Mass) as a Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus. Customs associate with Christmas (also known as midwinter, nativity, yule, and noel) include a mix of pre-Christian, Christian, and secular themes and origins. Hanukkah is known as the festival or miracle of the lights. With only enough oil to light the candelabrum for one day, a miracle occurred and the Jewish people at the temple were able to light the candelabrum for eight days. Kwanza was first celebrated in 1966. It is the annual celebration of African American culture and is held from Dec. 25 to Jan. 1, culminating in gift giving and a feast of faith called "Karamu Ya Imani." Congratulations to the winners of the October mini art show (at right): In first place was Myrna Smith who showed us her skill with acrylics in a lovely, peaceful forest scene. Second place went to Pattie Rogers who presented a bright acrylic painting of women at the flower market. Frank Bonarigo won the third place ribbon with a painting of the "Farmer's Market" in Los Angeles done in acrylic. Thank you to all who entered! Our November meeting featured oil and acrylic artist, Luz Perez. She gave a wonderful presentation which was followed up by three hands on classes where participants honed their painting skills. Thank you! The Art League also held our annual elections with many new faces joining the Board. Welcome! December is a "dark" month for the Art League with no meetings or classes scheduled. We wish all of you the happiest of holidays and a merry 2025! Our next meeting will be on Jan. 12, 2025, at 2 pm in the South Clubhouse. Let our New Year resolutions include a return to the wonder and joy of artistic endeavor.
