| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | DECEMBER 2024 | 37 Creative Writers Computer Club Our meetings are on the third Thursday of each month at 1 pm in the Multipurpose Room. Our next meeting is Thurs., Dec. 12 and the topic is Holiday Shopping for Computer Geeks. The Computer Club is for people of all computer skill levels. Each meeting will feature various presentations. This is a great way to share information and learn some of the ways to become an effective computer user. If you are on Facebook, you can go to the Good Day Sun Lakes page. This is a page for Sun Lakes residents only. Annual dues are $10 per household. Guests are welcome. If so, you know that you can choose from many kinds of subjects (history, autobiography, philosophy, humor, romance, adventure, mystery, suspense, science fiction, etc.). You can also choose an appropriate medium (play, epic poem, song or short poem, tale or short story, fictional novel, historical novel, history, biography, essay, dissertation, etc.). As a writer, you need to choose a medium for your message. For example, choose a novel for a mystery, a poem for a romance, an essay for a philosophical subject. At first glance, the subject dictates the medium. Or does it? The Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan famously argued that the medium is the message. So how does this work? For a philosophical topic, an essay with a point of departure is the classic choice – but other media work as well. Examples include plays of Shakespeare, poetry of Kipling (If ) or Shelley (Ozymandias), protest songs of Bob Dylan, and novels such as Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. So dare to flaunt convention when you choose a medium for your writing. Our Creative Writers Club has several experienced writers in many forms of literature. Come join us at Creative Writers Club meetings to share your ideas in a friendly setting, and listen to the writings and opinions of others. You will find this very stimulating.
