FEBRUARY SUNSHINE e February sunshine steeps the boughs and tints the buds and swells the leaves within. ~ William Cullen Bryant As the rain and cold temperatures start to fade and trees begin to show their new blankets of green for spring, we are reminded of the cycle of nature. Some of us might remember the snow-covered fields of Minnesota or the frozen lakes where we once ice fished, but here in OHCC we are blessed with abundant sunshine and warm days. It is no wonder that San Diego is ranked the best city for quality of life in the US. February is also a month for celebrations, including: National Freedom Day on the 1st, Groundhog Day on the 2nd, Golden Retriever Day on the 3rd (shall we have a parade?). For all sports fans, Super Bowl Sunday is on the 11th. Valentine's Day, as you romantics know, is on the 14th, followed by President's Day, on the 17th, honoring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and National Wine Day on the 18th (don't miss that one). Speaking of celebrations, mark your calendars for Sun., Feb. 23 at 1 pm in Abravenal Hall for a presentation by Robert Genat, who will be speaking on his life as an author and his experiences in his passion for "e Great Cars I Have Known." He is a four-year resident of OHCC. He has authored over 35 books on military and transportation and has published over 200 magazine articles. One of his favorite quotes is by Frank Zappa, "A mind is like a parachute, it doesn't work unless it is open." Come and enjoy another great "Afternoon with Authors" series presentation. Sign-ups for this rewarding experience begin on Feb. 1 at the front desk. Library members attend free, and nonmembers are $5 each. For those of you who may have missed the Do Dues Day in January, you can still sign up for the Library Club. Dues are $15 per household per year and that allows you free admission to all the "Afternoon with Authors" series, and free use of the library including the check-out of reserved books. Join any time by bringing your check to the front desk. Make your checks payable to OHCC Library Club. If you are someone who enjoys a good historical fiction, The Underground Library by Jennifer Ryan, is an excellent choice. When the Blitz imperils the heart of a London neighborhood, three young women must use their fighting spirit to save their beloved library. Each brings different backgrounds and emotional baggage to the task. When the library is bombed, they move it to an underground shelter where tragedy after tragedy threatens their task to preserve the symbol of hope for this shattered community. The question is, will they be able to overcome their own troubles to keep this symbol of community and love? It is an inspiring read.
