| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2025 | 29 Pet Lovers Club Fourth Annual "Presents For Pets" Four years ago, the OHCC Pet Lovers Club started working with Meals on Wheels in San Marcos to identify clients who have pets and are receiving pet food from their "Animeals" program through the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter. The PLC decided that we could help them by giving gifts for their pets. Many clients have no money to buy pet gifts. The PLC works with Meals on Wheel San Marcos to identify those owners and learn what gifts they would like. Some of the gifts we already had, through donations. Some items had to be purchased outside. When residents make out checks donated to our PLC, we use those monies to buy the gifts on the wish lists. We had an overwhelming response this year, filling 63 gift bags. The presents went to 51 cats and 46 dogs. We can see the joy on the faces of three clients and their pets upon opening their gift bags. We received the following thank you note from one of the clients (unfortunately she would not have her picture taken) Happy Holidays! I'm a disabled senior living near the San Luis Rey Mission in Oceanside, CA. I just received your generous gi, donated through the Meals on Wheels program. My cats are going out of their minds with happiness! Temptations treats, cat nip toys, and a gi certicate that will feed them through January and February too!! I am so grateful. I am so happy. I am so glad that there are humans such as yourselves taking the time to care about others and to be kind to even the least among us: our four-legged friends. May the good you do return to you a hundredfold. Sincerely, W.K. Ballard, Oceanside, CA When paying dues for 2025 ($10 per household), please make sure your information includes your pet's name and breed, which helps us identify a pet who becomes lost or goes missing. Please also include this information about when vehicle renewal happens in February. Written by Ellen Kippel & Karen Hastings Salt Club Salt Is A New Club! Aristotle said, "to be a friend to someone you must eat a sack of salt together"… a pinch of salt here, a pinch of salt there… with each pinch of salt you add a story to the friendship and slowly form a new history. From a new and shared history comes the chance to serve and love together; to connect with each other while participating in varying and exciting festivities; to pause and celebrate a new milestone; and, together, engage in projects that will help find the resources and solutions needed for those who are experiencing challenges in their lives: Ageism, Isolation, How to Cope With Grief, Caregiver and Homebound Support, Healthy Eating and Relationship Building in the OHCC community. In January, we gathered at The Board Game Cafe for a Decadent Hot Cocoa Bar and Board Game Party, where we did the Cocoa Crawl to create specialty Hot Cocoa Floats and played board games. We shared our favorite pastries and savory appetizers; and, as time went by, we knew we were in a place where everyone was glad we came. We celebrated new beginnings and friendships, engaged in lively conversation and good food; and we knew that there is a place for us where everybody knows our name… If you are interested in joining SALT, complete a membership form at the front desk in the Clubhouse. Membership is $10 per person. We look forward to seeing you at our next event in February! Written by Jeannie Critcheld
