Newbies is the official welcoming group for Ocean Hills Country Club residents (homeowners and renters). We have quarterly gatherings where new and established residents can meet, mingle, and get to know each other. We enjoyed a turnout of 68 people at the Dec. 22 potluck in Abravanel Hall. We are grateful to Barbara DuDeck, OHCC Resident Realtor, Your Sunny San Diego Connection, who sponsored a portion of the overhead expenses. We would also like to acknowledge with gratitude the time and effort donated by our Newbies Ambassadors and Volunteers. A prize was awarded to the newest resident, Marcee Sherrill, who spent her first night in OHCC on Dec. 22. Hallie Delorey, who moved from Boston, MA, and Stan Satty and Carol Burton, who moved from Norwalk, CT, received prizes for moving to OHCC from the farthest away. Everyone enjoyed the potluck, new resident introductions, games, and opportunity drawings. This month, we are spotlighting new residents Joel Batzofin, MD, and his wife Teresa Randolph. This couple moved to OHCC from Laguna Niguel last summer, mostly to be closer to their grandchildren in Carlsbad. Originally from South Africa, Joel was a Reproductive Endocrinologist & Fertility Specialist. Teresa was originally from Oklahoma and worked as a sales & marketing specialist within the fertility sector. They have lived and worked on both coasts, having returned to California from New York in 2019. They are both still active within healthcare. Joel and Teresa have traveled extensively across all seven continents. In 2014, they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in conjunction with a nursing mission to Tanzania that was organized by their daughter Tammy. Joel even wrote a book about those experiences: One Step at a Time, A Climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. They are both avid golfers and enthusiastic wine drinkers. They love to hike, bike and swim and have recently taken up pickleball. So far, they've joined the RV Club, Doo Wop Club, and Golf Club. They are dog people, and even brought their well-mannered Rhodesian Ridgeback service dog, Hudson, to last September's Newbies gathering. Joel and Teresa are thrilled with the warm welcome they have received from the OHCC community and look forward to growing older with all their new friends. The next Newbies gathering will be held on Sat., March 22, from noon to 3 pm on the Lanai. Details will be publicized well in advance. We now have close to 600 members in our golf club after Do Dues Day, making it one of the largest in OHCC. Our season has just started up for spring. We have Mixed Co-ed Mondays, Men's Tuesdays, Niners Tuesdays, Ladies Day Wednesday, Guys and Dolls, Touring amateurs, and hopefully special tournaments if volunteers step up! These are wonderful ways to compete in our Golf Club, make friends, improve your game and be a part of the action at our one-of-a-kind golf course. Our queen of the green was crowned on Dec. 11; Patti Waterman shot an incredible 65 gross with a low net of 54 and Vicki Brady was runner up! Congrats to all 12 of our Aces for 2024 (pictured). Tim Johnston (below) was our Player of the Year playing 57 tournament days, 10 wins with 558 points winning by six points over Greg Gamble as the runner up! For those of you who like to look at data, there is a cool feature on Golf Genius on our golf website that is "Player Analytics." You can view your total stats on the year including how many Eagles, Birdies, Pars, Doubles or higher as well as see your comparison hole by hole. Some would ask, "why would I do that?" Well, you can see where you are good, bad or downright ugly on this little track and make adjustments to your game to improve. Next tournament is Guys & Dolls Sat., Feb. 15. Get outside, play golf, and be healthy in 2025! Written by Teresa Deutman Joel Batzon & Teresa Randolph
