This is the perspective of the artist of the
month, Janet West.
"I have been a student in Rob Kelman's class
for a year and a half. Rob is serious about the
name of the class; it truly is Mixed Media Arts. Although most of
the students are working in graphite pencil watercolors
or acrylic, he can teach you to succeed in any media.
"My picture started as a graphite pencil drawing
inspired by Arches National Park in Utah, with the
dinosaurs being two of the sculptures at Moab Giants
Park located in Utah. Once my pencil drawing was
done, I traced it onto plain cotton muslin fabric.
"Next, I stitched on the pencil tracing with black
thread. en, I started painting on the fabric. I used
Jacquard Textile Color fabric paint, which is an acrylic
paint premixed with fabric medium to paint the rock
formations. e colors blended on the fabric just as
they would on paper. e dinosaurs were colored
with Inktense pencils, which are a permanent-colored
pencil. I completed it by quilting the sky in a free
motion pattern and foreground to look like plants.
is creation was totally nished when I turned it into
a wall hanging with batting and backing. is piece
was fun to do and I love mixing it up, as the class name
implies."
Come and join us. Classes are held on Mondays from 10 am to 12
noon and/or Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm. If you have any
questions, call Rob at (951) 992-9156. ~ Rob Kelman
