FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2025 31 Safety Committee SAFETY 4 "ALL" SEASONS Happy Heart Month! HEALTHY HABIT STACKING Do you nd it hard to stick with healthy habits? e American Heart Association has provided the following science-backed tips to help you build lasting habits for better health. FITNESS "BITS" "If you can walk you can dance; if you can talk you can sing." is African proverb suggests that based on what you already do, you can do more, which is also what a strategy called "habit stacking" is about: enhancing your life by building on things you already do. e goal of habit stacking is to tie (and eventually, stack) tiny but benecial new habits onto your old ones every day. As an example, when you shut your alarm o in the morning, take a moment to stretch your arms, legs, ankles, and feet before getting your day in motion. Below are a few other habit stacking ideas to get you started. Feel free to add new ideas on top of the following: When you… Brush your teeth. Try this… Add a few squats as you brush. en work in other exercises, like calf raises or lunges. When you… Turn on the morning news. Try this… Do 10 toe touches as you listen. Add jumping jacks or arm circles. When you… Sit down to eat or use a computer. Try this… Do a set or two of seated exercises before you begin. When you… Go to work or the store. Try this… Look for a safe parking spot farther from the building, so you can log a few more steps. Or if you take public transit, get o a stop early and walk to your destination. When you… Arrive home. Try this… Work in time for active play with your pets. Later you can add an active chore like dusting or sweeping a room. When you… Turn on the TV in the evening. Try this… March in place for ve minutes (or more) before you sit down to watch. You can even add in some weight liing while you are seated. When you… Talk on the phone or listen to a podcast. Try this… Stretch any combination of your quadriceps, hamstrings, or calves. You can even add some wall push-ups. When you… Set the table and cook dinner. Try this… Play some of your favorite music and dance (and sing!) as you cook. Set aside time to focus on dancing to one entire song. When you… Wash up before bed. Try this… Finish by practicing a balance exercise (refer to this month's Community Awareness article). Habit stacking is meant to help to renew your focus on tness and maybe put a little extra joy and pep in the process. Be sure to check with your healthcare professional before you try anything that might be challenging. The Community Planning Committee is conducting an in-depth study of trends for senior, active living communities to ensure that we sustain our status as a premier, resort-style 55+ community. Thus, we are particularly interested in soliciting your input regarding your experience living here at Four Seasons Beaumont. The questionnaire is distributed this month in multiple formats via email, the Daily Report, and hard copies on hand with The Lodge front desk attendants. The resident questionnaire is designed to get information about the facilities, amenities, and activities used and valued at Four Seasons Beaumont. You are given the opportunity to share what you find most enjoyable and provide suggestions regarding our amenities, facilities, and activities. Your opinion is of vital importance to us as we strive to maintain a most appealing lifestyle for us all. ~ Jane Hopper, janehooper@yahoo.com Community Planning
