As the first president of the African Heritage Connection Club (AHCC) it is an honor to get to know so many of my fellow neighbors of African Heritage (Black) here in Sun Lakes Country Club (SLCC). In 2023, it was exciting to learn at that time, SLCC has nearly 200 Black residents — and the number continues to grow. 200 is not a lot in a community of over 6,000 residents but it is impressive growth from when I first moved to SLCC in 2000. There were so few Black residents, we rarely saw each other. AHCC was formed in 2024,and since then we have had a couple of successful events, including a Juneteenth celebration and a holiday party. Our vision for AHCC is to have a club here in SLCC that brings Black residents together to share our common and diverse life experiences while having a good time. Our first months as a Club have been spent getting our footing and creating a path to bring us together. Now in 2025 we will all be walking our path and bringing our ideas to life! Our vision is one where members of the SLCC Black community will share lots of entertaining experiences. This will include monthly gatherings where we dine, enjoy music, and visit; special events where we celebrate our history and unique experiences; and excursions that will begin this year. AHCC's first excursion for members is currently being explored for a few months from now. We are looking forward to our new monthly AHCC Book Club, focusing on Black literature, with an occasional author reading and a Q & A session. In our vision, Black Sun Lakes residents will have new friends to make it more enjoyable to participate, not only in our club activities, but in the wonderful Sun Lakes amenities we all support through our HOA dues. We look forward to living our vision and encouraging all our Black neighbors to join us. We invite other interested Sun Lakers to come and make new friends, while enjoying new experiences with us. To learn about becoming a member of AHCC, contact Eleanor Kendrick, Membership Chair, at (917) 670-6673. Meetings are held monthly on the second Wednesday at 6:30 pm in the North Clubhouse. Come explore the many African heritage connections here at Sun Lakes. ~ Beverly Rashidd, AHCC President 26 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2025 | African Heritage Connection Club
