68 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2025 | Harry Gerald Nead, 95 years old of Banning, California, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2024 after a brief illness. He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Claire Marie Ryan, of Brighton, Ma. Born in 1929 in Obion County Tennessee, Harry traveled to Southern California with his uncle Randolph Snow as a young man. Harry was called to serve in the US Army as a supply sergeant during the Korean War and returned to Southern California. Upon his return, Harry began a 28-year career with Trans World Airlines where he met Claire Ryan, a Trans World Airlines Stewardess. They married in the spring of 1958, settled in Pacific Palisades, California, and raised two daughters. Both Harry and Claire enjoyed extensive travel, sailing, and the temperate climate of Southern California. They chose Sun Lakes as their place of retirement in 1989. Harry was an active member of the Sun Lakes community and served on the Transportation Board in Banning. The people who knew him say that he always greeted them with a big smile, had a great laugh, and was always ready to share information or a helpful tip. Harry Nead is survived by daughters, Linda Boulger and Lisa Nead, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He will be missed by the friends and neighbors with whom he enjoyed visiting over the many years. Johanne M. Howland passed away at Loma Linda Hospital on December 5, 2024. Johanne lived in Sun Lakes for over 20 years and loved it here. She was very proud to be a part of the community. Her passion was singing and music; she was a member of the Sun Lakes Chorale and the Pass Chorale in Banning. She was also a fan of Formula One racing and used to volunteer as pit crew! She is survived by her older brother Elmer Grimsgaard, her daughter, two grandsons, and two great-grandsons. Her ashes will be scattered on Onion Mountain in Oregon.
