We are having our "Firewise" presentation on March 4th. Just to give you a little information, Sun Lakes is trying to become a "Firewise" community. e Firewise USA program provides a collaborative framework for neighbors to reduce wildre risks at the local level. e national recognition program's annual criteria is designed to empower and engage residents living in wildre prone areas with a plan and actions that can increase their home's chances of surviving a wildre while also making it safer for reghters. ere are several steps needed to become a "Firewise" community. Gary Lyle, Ann-Marie Hanko, Brian O'Grady and Michele Walter are the liaisons for our community. We have divided our community into four sections. is program may help us in lowering the cost of our insurance policies. We need volunteers to get this program started. If you are interested in being part of this much needed program, please contact Michele Walter at (951) 202-8009. We can't stress enough about being prepared for a disaster. With all the res that are happening in California and the unfortunate plane disasters, this is the best time for you to get prepared. is is the Basic Emergency Supply Kit recommended by FEMA: • Water and non-perishable food for several days • Extra cell phone battery or charger • Battery-powered or hand crank radio that can receive NOAA Weather Radio tone alerts and extra batteries • Flashlights and extra batteries • First aid kit • Whistle to signal for help • Dust mask, to help lter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation • Non-sparking wrench or pliers to turn o utilities • Can opener (if kit contains canned food) • Local maps Additional items to consider: medications & glasses; copies of insurance policies; identication and bank account records; cash and change; re extinguisher; personal hygiene items and hand sanitizer; complete changes of clothing; sleeping bag or warm blankets for each person. FEMA recommends individuals should consider having at least two emergency supply kits, one full kit at home and a smaller portable kit in your vehicle. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.
