Juan Tallo-Tullo & Hebe Tabachnik Bert & Coleen Stieg Jan. 17, 18, and 19 was a very special weekend for 20 of our Sun Lakes Country Club residents. We assembled at the Main Clubhouse for a 20-hour CERT Training, which we all completed and received a certificate. What is CERT, you ask? CERT, which stands for Community Emergency Response Team, was formed to train civilians in basic disaster response skills so they could assist professional first responders during large-scale emergencies, particularly in situations where immediate help might not be readily available. This can effectively bridge the gap between when a disaster strikes and when professional responders may arrive on scene. The concept was initially developed by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985 following observations of citizen response during earthquakes in Mexico City and Japan. In 1995, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) adopted and expanded the CERT program nationwide, making it a standard disaster preparedness initiative. CERT training covers skills in disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, first aid, team organization, and disaster medical operations. We also received tips on utility controls, terrorism, and disaster psychology. During our training we also participated in and practiced hand-on skills which will enable us to take action in an emergency or accident. All in all, it was a very worthwhile and important training. We would like to thank our Master Board for funding the training. ~ Janis Rice, EPAP PIO
