BEAUTY PAGEANT SEEKS MALE/ FEMALE CONTESTANTS TO ASSUME THE ROLES OF KING XERXES AND QUEEN ESTHER! Help us reenact the Purim story which takes place in Persia (modern Iran) (usually dated to the 4th centuries BCE), where a Jew named Mordechai was a member of the court of King Ahasuerus aka Xerxes. When the King's wife, Vashti, refused to appear naked before a crowd, the King held a beauty contest which was won by Esther, a cousin and adopted daughter of Mordechai. The King fell in love with Esther and she became Queen in Vashti's place. Trouble ensued when the evil Haman, an anti-Semite, was named Grand vizier. When Mordechai refused to bow down to Haman, he ordered a massacre of all the Jews. Esther came to the rescue when she invited the King to a private banquet for his personal entertainment. After charming him, she spoke of what Haman had decreed. She told her husband, risking her own life, that she was a Jew and that Haman had issued an edict ordering the execution of her people. The King, furious, had Haman hanged on the very same gallows he had prepared for Mordechai. All of this is recounted in the Book of Esther or the Megillah, which was written by both Queen Esther and Mordechai, who, robed in royal blue, assumed the position of second in rank to the King. Costumes are usually in order for the Purim celebration. Here today, at the YCC, we are going to reenact the beauty contest where King Xerxes found his beautiful Esther. But first we will have to find us a King! Suggested costumes are veils/harem clothing/ robes/ shawls for women, tri-cornered hats for men/King crowns/sandals/fake beards.
