Newbies is the ocial welcoming group for Ocean Hills Country Club residents (owners and renters). We have quarterly gatherings where new and established residents can meet, mingle and get to know each other. e gatherings are loosely structured and provide new residents with an opportunity to introduce themselves. Our goal is to have you walk away with new friends and a feeling of community. ere are many activities available at OHCC and you can participate as much or as little as you choose. e choices are nearly endless: golf, racquet sports, swimming, bocce ball, cras, music, billiards, Mahjong, card games and more. OHCC oers 40 ocial clubs and many other special interest groups. OHCC is truly a year-round summer camp for adults. is month we are spotlighting new residents, Patrick (Pat) and Barbara Campbell (above). ey have been married for 37 years and lived in Silicon Valley (Morgan Hill) until 2021, where they raised two sons. ey followed their sons to San Diego, moving to Carlsbad. While happy to have the kids close, the Campbells joined our community last year to expand their experiences and use our amenities. e Campbells both grew up in northern New Jersey just outside New York City, although they didn't meet until more than a decade aer high school. Pat received a business degree from Rutgers while Barbara worked for local engineering rms. Pat then worked on Wall, immediately followed by pursuit of a law degree in Boston. Pat is retired from the tech industry, where he held various global business development and strategy roles for 35 years. During this time, he and Barbara volunteered in organizations like Scouting, Court Appointed Foster Youth Advocacy (CASA), and Habitat for Humanity. Pat's retirement in late 2023 allowed him to dedicate additional time to volunteering. He is currently president of the oldest golf club in San Diego – e Waterfront Golf Club, named in honor of a dive bar close to the harbor in San Diego; and he serves as a docent at the USS Midway Museum. e Campbells have a range of hobbies, and both enjoy adventure travel. Pat is working on his golf game but suspects this will be a lifelong pursuit. He also likes shing and is a glass blowing artist. Barbara avidly practices and teaches yoga, loves to hike, and creates healthy dishes in the kitchen for which Pat is particularly grateful! e next Newbies gathering will be held on March 22 from 12 to 3 pm on e Lanai. Details will be publicized well in advance. For more information, email us at ohccnewbies@gmail.com or visit our website: https://ohccnewbies.wixsite.com/ohccnewbies. Our rst Guys and Dolls tournament of the year got underway on Feb. 15 to a full eld. Our feature this month is on our Rules chair, Natalie Sentz, (inset). An avid golfer, Natalie shares tips on how to play the game according to USGA rules as well as ideas on how to play faster and enjoy the game sharing them in story. You can nd all of her Q & A on OHGC.net site anytime you need a reference. If bunkers give you nightmares, there are THREE simple ways out without having to play from the sand. Your best bet is to learn how to hit a bunker shot and practice as much as possible, however if you need a way out Natalie shares these rules. 1. For a two-stroke penalty, you can drop your ball OUTSIDE the bunker. Visualize a line from the ag through your ball. Drop your ball on that line as far back as you want to go. 2. You can go back to wherever you hit your previous shot from and, for a one-stroke penalty, try it again. 3. Pick up your ball, record an X on your scorecard, and head for the next hole. Sometimes, we all just need a break. ere is so much great information on our website, spend some time navigating to get the best experience. Lake construction: When it begins the entire back 9 will be closed for the safety of our players. Please follow these guidelines so that we can ensure the work gets done quickly and without delays coming for our golfers. Perhaps look into adding a ball retriever to your gear or lessons on how to avoid that water altogether! Written by Teresa Deutman Pat & Barbara Campbell
