| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2025 | 17 Trespassers into our community will always be an issue to be addressed. Patrol has been very responsive to calls from residents regarding suspicious activity. Both the Safety Advisory Committee and Securitas strongly encourage all residents to implement preventative measures to deter any possible thefts. This includes locking doors and windows when away from your residence, install lighting in dim or dark areas around your home, keeping garage doors closed, and remaining vigilant. If you see something, say something. Your first call should be to Banning PD, and then call the main gate to report what you see. Patrol will respond quickly! Securitas has responded to multiple calls involving residents who have fallen or required immediate assistance. In many instances, the fire department had been dispatched to provide aid, sometimes needing to forcibly enter a residence when access was not available. To ease access in these situations, we ask residents to update their emergency contact information through Administration, Security, or their District Delegate. Listing a neighbor as an emergency contact can also be helpful to those who live alone. Some District Delegates have taken the initiative to check in on residents who do not have immediate family nearby, ensuring their well being on a regular basis. Residents should have their emergency contact information readily accessible to facilitate a swift response should an incident occur. An evacuation map has been created and is readily available to all Sun Lakers at the Administration Building. The map outlines which gates each district should use in the event of an emergency and it is color coded for easy reference. This map has been distributed in District newsletters, text blasts, and on the Sun Lakes website. If you don't have one, go to the Administration building to get one. It is important that all residents are prepared in the event of a real-time evacuation order. Being familiar with these designated evacuation routes will help streamline evacuation efforts and reduce confusion during an emergency. In collaboration with EPAP and emergency personnel, Securitas will play a critical role in maintaining traffic control and ensuring gate accessibility to facilitate a smooth and orderly evacuation. Community preparedness is key to enhancing safety, and having this information in advance will help protect both residents and first responders during emergencies. When you filled out registration forms when you moved in to Sun Lakes, there was a question about what pet(s) you have and how many. Residents are allowed to have two pets/household. For many of you, the information is outdated and needs to be updated. It is suggested that you update your pet information with administration so that first responders can be aware of what pets need to be evacuated in the event of an emergency. Remember: • If you see something, say something • Keep your pets on a leash • Keep your garage doors closed • Obey trac signs and speed limits ~ Michael Volz, vmv1950@aol.com Safety Advisory Sand traps (bunkers) provide visual interest and are usually one of the most beautiful design features on a golf course. They provide a challenge to golfers and enhance the aesthetics of a golf hole. Golf course architects design bunkers to be visible to a golfer from a distance so they can plan their strategy. A lot goes into the design of a bunker often dictated by the length and difficulty of the golf hole. Usually the high point or steep side of the bunker is designed to provide perspective from the tee shot to the fairway or fairway shot into the green. The GAC has received inquiries regarding bunker entry and exit. The main concern is regarding the steep slope from the fairway or green into the bunker. Our sand traps are designed with a low point usually on the backside of the bunker that is often the side opposite the fairway or green. This design feature was emphasized in renovated bunkers on the Championship Course. While this route in and out of the bunker is not the most direct or convenient it is the safest. Golfers are asked to leave the rake at this low point to encourage entry for those golfers that follow. Please avoid entry and exit on the steep side of bunkers from the fairway or green. The renovated sand traps at Sun Lakes use a state of the art liner system of pelletized rubber mixed with a binding agent and coated along the bottom of bunker. This separates the sand and soil to maintain the integrity of the sand. Using a liner improves drainage, reduces weed growth, and increases the life expectancy of a sand trap. The GAC asks golfers to use a little care and not just rake sand up the side of the bunker. Many times when a golfer reports a bunker needs more sand, golf maintenance finds sand raked and accumulated in one area of the bunker and not evenly distributed. Raking bunkers to maintain a 4" sand depth throughout the bunker greatly helps to protect the liner. ~ Mike Callahan, callahm56@ yahoo.com Golf Advisory
