32 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2025 | New Possibilities. New Connections. This year the African Heritage Connection Club is preparing to embark on a series of wonderful events and activities. As a new club, AHCC has been listening to the diverse interests of our members and those who are considering membership. The mission and vision of AHCC is to celebrate, appreciate, and share the joys of our African heritage and common identity at Sun Lakes. These ongoing informational, inspirational, and social events keep us connected to each other and our shared history. We've kicked off 2025 with two very interesting and engaging meetings. We're on a roll! Our monthly meetings and special events have something for everybody. At our April meeting, we will include a discussion panel entitled "HerStory" with Virginia Green, Linda Cole, and Cynthia White-Piper. Everyone has lived their personal experience in America. Some experiences are a little different than many might be familiar with. Come and learn from these ladies' sharing their lived African heritage experiences. Mr. Dorsel Smith will provide exceptional musical entertainment ensuring interactive connections with attendees. Dinner will be available at every monthly member meeting. Along with Black history shorts, music, and dancing. In the coming months, members can look forward to a Red Tails (Tuskegee airmen) movie with dinner in May. On the schedule is also a fun interactive and creative Paint and Sip evening, with many more fun and enlightening meetings. Excursions are also on the agenda. A day trip to the African American Beginnings Museum and a visit to the African American Museum in Washington D.C. Special events to include the public: an evening of Jazz in June celebrating Juneteenth, a Gospel Music Brunch in September, and a Black author reading and Black artist show in the fall. We also seek to continue our engagement with everyone to identify your specific interests for participation as we enhance our 2025 calendar. Part of our African heritage connection and shared history is the AHCC Book Club, focusing on Black literature. The AHCC Book Club will have their monthly meeting Sat., April 12 from 6 to 7:30 pm in the Main Clubhouse Atrium. We will discuss the novel James by Percival Everette. AHCC members can contact Athena Lark at (832) 739-8113 or email, athenalark@gmail.com for more information. You can always expect engagement, a little fun, lots of camaraderie, great information, and a down-home meal, at our monthly members meetings. Everyone is welcome. Come explore the many African heritage connections that are amongst us here at Sun Lakes. To learn more about the benefits of AHCC membership and how you can become a part of our club, contact Eleanor Kendrick at (917) 670-6673. Membership forms are available in the Main Clubhouse foyer.
