Makua Hula Hawaiian Dancers
Makua Hula Hawaiian Dancers invited Kumu Keoni Martin from Hawaii to visit and
instruct us. Kumu Keoni (kumu means teacher in Hawaiian) is a Hula Master and has ties
to our community with his sister and brother-in-law living here. We learned a hula Kahiko, a
traditional Hawaiian dance that is performed to chants and traditional instruments. The word
Kahiko means "old" or "ancient." We also learned a hula dance using Puili Bamboo dance
sticks. These are used for traditional hula dances. We truly appreciated and thank Kumu
Keoni for sharing his time and talent with us.
Anyone interested in learning more about Hawaiian Hula dancing is welcome to join the
Makua Hula Dancers every Wednesday at the North Clubhouse from 10 am to 12 pm. No
previous dance experience is necessary.
If you are interested in having the Makua Hula dancers perform for your event or would like
more information, contact Perla Williams at (951) 467-8339 or pearlyshellsdancer@gmail.com.
