| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2025 | 49 Arlene's Breakfast Club is a group of wonderful Sun Lakes ladies who enjoy a morning of fellowship and breakfast. We meet at 9am in the Main Clubhouse Restaurant the second Thursday of each month. We have a variety of speakers on various topics and support our local veterans with donations. Our breakfast is a buffet for $18 including tax and tip. No dues, just pay for your meal. We must provide an accurate count to the Restaurant, so enough food is prepared. Please call Patti Donitini at (951) 769-3271 for more information and to RSVP. Arlene's Breakfast Club If you have a classic car, love to ride or sit in one, talk about or just look at one, you need to join our club! We have no membership fees or dues, and our meetings are once a month and very short. We begin at 9 am on the first Saturday of every month in the parking lot of the Main Clubhouse. We display our cars and talk shop, and at 9:30 am we meet in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room for a very short meeting. We announce car shows, discuss upcoming activities and events, and then go out together for breakfast. Men and women, husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, are all welcome. We're all about fun and good fellowship, and we're looking for new members to share our good vibe. You don't even need to own a classic car. Come join us and expand your social life! Be sure to bring a chair. For more information, contact Denny Rugenstein at (317) 370- 8943. Cruzin' Cronies Happy Cookers Happy Cookers has already had a few fun months in 2025. Join us at our April meeting for more fun. We are celebrating Grilled Cheese month. Beware – it goes by other names in other countries ("jaff le" in Australia). First found in English-speaking cookbooks in England, a recipe in "Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management" in 1861, but a similar preparation is mentioned in ancient Roman texts. Henry Kraft invented processed (pasteurized) cheese in 1915, which would not spoil when shipped nationwide. The U.S. Army purchased six million pounds of this cheese during WWI. Open-face broiled cheese sandwiches were hugely popular during the depression. The term "grilled cheese" actually did not appear in print until the 1960s. I love Croque Monsieur when I am in France — soft sandwich bread, Gruyere cheese, and ham, fried up in butter. Croque translates to crunch. Also this month, a notable time for children and grandchildren in school is "Poet in a Cupcake week" celebrated the second week of April. There will be millions of cupcakes eaten on April 11 with cutouts of famous poetry authors on top. Here's a little fun poem by English poet Christina Rosetti called Brother Bruin: A dancing Bear grotesque and funny, Earned for his master heaps of money. Gru yet good-natured, fond of honey, And cheerful if the day was sunny. Past hedge and ditch, past pond and wood, He tramped, and on some common stood. ere, cottage children circling gaily, He in their midmost footed daily. Pandean pipes and drum and muzzle Were quite enough his brain to puzzle. But like a philosophic bear He let alone extraneous care And danced contented everywhere. Happy Cookers meets on the fourth Friday of each month at 11 am in the South Clubhouse, and new members are welcome anytime. We feature guest speakers, cooking demonstrations, outings, or samples of themed cooking provided by our members. Come to a meeting and check us out! Annual dues are $25 and your first meeting is free. For membership information, contact Barbara Elness at Barbed1951@aol.com.
