FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2025 15
"Understanding the Weather" – A Series by Mel Zeldin, Retired Meteorologist
This past winter has been on the dry side of average, with
February temperatures unusually warm during the last week of
the month. Looking forward to the spring months, outlooks for
temperature and precipitation from the Climate Prediction Center
are shown below.
For temperature, in Figure 1, Southern California has equal
chances of being above or below average, with greater above-average
temperatures in the southern United States east of us. Given what
we have experienced during the winter, we will likely see balanced
periods of above average temperatures as well as below average
temperatures so that the overall average is near normal.
For precipitation, in Figure 2, Southern California is indicated to
have equal chances of above or below normal rainfall, but what is
interesting about this projection is that areas just to the north and
east of us are in the below-normal category. This would suggest
a rather unusual weather pattern of a lower latitude trajectory of
relatively weak storm systems.
