Black History, Boots, and Whiskey The African American Cultural Club (AACC) kicked off Black History Month with a cowboy experience on Feb. 8. The theme, "Black Cowboys," lassoed attendees into a world of history, music, dance, and good old-fashioned country fun. The event began with our own touch of hospitality when a group of gentlemen escorted ladies to the celebration, setting a tone of class and charm. Inside, the Bistro served lunch as DJ Rodney Bowen played smooth tunes, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Deanna Taylor, who sells western wear in our hair salon, was set up in the Ballroom selling her collection of western apparel, hats, and jewelry. Attendees wore cowboy hats and boots, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Adding authenticity to the event, special guest Cameron Hawley, owner of the Hawley Ranch in Banning, gave an engaging roping demonstration using a wooden calf. Participants from the audience attempted calf roping, which proved challenging. AACC Board member, Elaine Brown, reported on her trip to the Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville, Tennessee. She shared shots of the Uncle Nearest award winning whiskey and screened a video about the brand's fascinating history, highlighting the legacy of Nathan "Nearest" Green, the Black master distiller who taught Jack Daniel how to make whiskey. Afterwards, the dance f loor filled up as Janine Rohrbacker, the country line dance instructor, taught dance sequences to "Texas Hold 'Em" by Beyoncé and "Boots on the Ground" by 803Fresh. The energy was high, as attendees formed a soul train line, and enjoyed cutting a rug for the rest of the afternoon. Beyond the Black Cowboy celebration, the AACC also broadened its cultural horizons. At the invitation of Harvey Toyama of the Opera Club, AACC members viewed the Black opera, Fire Shut Up in My Bones, in The Lodge Theater. The club also enjoyed a showing of the classic film Buck and the Preacher, starring Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte. Mark June 19 on your calendar for more cultural fun! The AACC's Juneteenth Walk and celebration are events you will not want to miss. The next club meeting is Monday, April 7, at 6 pm in The Lodge Game Room.
