FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2025 67 "When I was forty, my doctor advised me that a man in his forties shouldn't play tennis. I heeded his advice carefully and could hardly wait until I reached fifty to start again." ~ Hugo Black, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Those of us in the FSB Tennis Club are well past our forties and fifties (okay, there's a few exceptions), but either never stopped playing tennis or restarted when we joined this active adult community. Accordingly, there was a lot of activity on the courts in March and April. Despite a two-week hiatus to accommodate the Indian Wells BNP Tennis Tournament, several USTA matches for the three Coachella Valley leagues in which we had teams were held. The final match for the Mixed Doubles team captained by Lou Stokes was hosted by FSB TC at The Courts. Though our team was not at risk of capturing an invitation to USTA Sectional play, the visiting team needed to beat us to grab first place in the league and move on to Sectionals. Our Line One team of Chuck Beckman and Gayle Vanderlinden secured their victory in a 10-point tiebreaker after each team won a set. The Line Three team of Lou Stokes and Larry Martin gave it a battle but lost their match. So, it came down to the Line Two contest to determine the match winner. With the other players and spectators looking on, the deciding match came down to another 10-point tiebreaker. The FSB team of Robert and Tracy Mahan fought their tough opponents point by point, until ultimately the Mahan's prevailed. A match win for our team and a big disappointment for the now second place CV team. Disappointment didn't last too long though, because the FSB USTA was the runaway winner at hosting the post-match refreshments. Throughout the season, visiting teams looked forward to the repasts prepared by our folks, particularly Tito Calderon, Rich Rojko, and Sonny Castanon. No league champs, but Michelin Star hosts! In early April, the Second Annual Trifecta Paddle Battle was held. The players competed in pickleball, paddle tennis, and real tennis. In the tennis portion of the event, the gold-medal team was Stan Lam and Syed Ali, after they won the play-off over Richard Carrasco and Robert Mahan. The third-place tennis team was Bev Haller and Steve Hovey.
