Matisse's flowers were the focal point of composite patterns. A swirling pattern and blocks of color surround his anemones. Their pink and purple petals echo on the background, their blues and reds fill the textiles, while their pure blacks and whites dominate the center. The artist loved anemones, which is clearly depicted in the painting. He used to paint them often, capturing them in a particular way as they sat in vases, either revealing more or hiding something. He carefully uses patterns of fabrics, which he amassed on his travels, such as the Moroccan tablecloth under his flower vase, blending the flowers with his luxurious exotic surroundings. Happy May, Sun Lakers! The colors of spring are evident all around us in this season of renewal. The Art League hopes you will pay us a visit this month on Sun., May 18 at 2 pm in the South Clubhouse. There will be refreshments, a mini-art show, a door prize, and guest artist Marcy McCallister. She will be showing her talent in decoupage/collage. This month we will be offering a one- day, three-hour workshop featuring Marcy on Mon., May 19 at 9 am in the Main Clubhouse Arts & Crafts Room. The March winners (pictured below) in our two-category, mini art show, are as follows: CLASSIC: 1st place: David Henke with a complex pour painting; 2nd place: Susan Van Loon with an oil painting on wood; and 3rd place: Frank Bonarigo with his painting of colorful hummingbirds. MISCELLANEOUS: 1st place: Suzanne Strauss presented a stylish woman done in pen and ink; 2nd place: Loria Hulzinga showed us a ceramic and glass inlay vase; and 3rd place: Jim Cochran who did a paper art tribute to Ukraine. Congratulations and thank you to all who entered! ATTENTION MEMBERS! This year our annual dinner will be on May 28 at 5 pm in the South Clubhouse, we will be having a meal catered by Thomas Catering. They will be serving lasagna, salad, rolls, and dessert. The cost will be $20 per person, and you may bring a guest. We will have entertainment, door prizes, lots of fun and good company.
