| OHCC LIVING | MAY 2025 | 41 Racquet Club The 150+ residents wrapped around the Pavilion Courts watching the annual Women's Pickleball Tournament Finals were treated to a show March 29. Six teams competed in two divisions to win 2025 bragging rights. Despite losing to Mary Blackman and Barbara Finney earlier in the afternoon, Sharon Sorensen and Cuca Lopez edged them in thrilling overtime play to earn the High Intermediate gold. Advanced division team Allison Womack and Diane Bednarski entered as favorites and played that way throughout the afternoon. Undeterred, Patricia Dellow and Carol Burton looked past their earlier round loss to the pair and gave Allison and Diane a run for their money. They ultimately had to settle for silver when Allison and Diane would not be beaten. Kudos to referee Charlie Cappello and the good sportsmanship of all who competed! Tournament Directors Harvey Bernstein and Van Rhonheimer's energetic support team – dozens of volunteers – produced a smooth- running event that ended on the Lanai with a Happy Hour Social and tournament awards. Karen Burke and Laura Urban's event- planning expertise allowed them to make an unexpected pivot while pulling off a fun celebration for players and their fans. Next up: Men's Pickleball Tournament June 7. Stop by the pickleball courts on May afternoons to observe lessons filling the courts at less popular times of the day. Mondays 2 to 4 pm, Herb Livsey and his accomplished staff are coaching novices on their way to higher skill levels. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, our Pro Series clinics bring in professionally certified outside coaches to challenge intermediate/advanced players. And one of the most accomplished resident players, David Levine, teaches a Friday class for club members planning to play in the upcoming men's and mixed doubles tournaments. Free monthly beginner classes for all OHCC residents are taught by talented resident pickleballers Daniel Sansoni, Celia Quinn, Guy James, Bruce Lambert, and Diane Bednarski (among others). The RC Help Desk has more information. Margo Barnard and friends are doing all they can to draw tennis players out to the courts. A well-attended early April tennis social was designed to get more residents who enjoy playing tennis to play regularly. We periodically update the racquet sports Rules for Play for all residents. Your OHCC visitors may join you at the courts in accordance with those rules which are posted on court bulletin boards, emailed to all Racquet Club members and residents with Skedda reservation IDs, and posted on the RC website. Contact the RC Help Desk to request a copy. Website: ohccracquetclub.org Help Desk: email ohrchelp@ gmail.com. Written by Ann Rike Lotsa work but plenty of fun say our tournament volunteers. Referee Charlie Cappello keeps close eye on Diane Bednarksi and Allison Womack Volunteers are the lifeblood of out club.
