34 | THE COLONY NEWS | JUNE 2025 | Our May Pickleball tournament was a real family aair. My wife, Rani, had a family emergency, so at the last minute, my brother, Gregg, stepped up to take my place and run the round- robin. en, on the morning of the tournament, three players informed me that they weren't feeling well, and I scrambled to ll their early morning play slots. My Pickleball "family" rose to the occasion with literally a few minutes notice. In the end, we had a very successful tournament, and everyone had a ball. A special shout out to Roswitha and her hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries. It is seldom spoken of, but it must be acknowledged that our group is lled with truly caring and kind people. If you would like to become a member of this fabulous group, please don't hesitate to contact me or simply come down to the courts and join in the fun. We would love to have any and all who wish to be part of our "family." As always, no reservations are needed. Just come on down and play the fastest-growing sport in the country. Pickleball By Scott Ross, 310-213-3362 Bocce By Valorie Hillerich I bet everyone has heard of Bocce, right? Did you know that the earliest games of Bocce can be traced back to ancient Egypt, around 5200 BC? Bocce, or "lawn bowling," in its current form, is "claimed" by Italy, with its popularity spreading through Italian communities. But Bocce can now also be claimed by a fun group of residents in e Colony! Every ursday from 4 to 6 pm, a bunch of enthusiastic, energetic guys and gals join together to play. e game is simple: Teams take turns rolling their bocce balls toward a smaller target ball (pallino), aiming to get their bocce balls as close as possible to the pallino. Easy, right? YES! Are there more rules? Well, yes… but that's for later… For now, what to bring… just yourself! And if you'd like to bring a beverage (adult or otherwise) and some nibbles to share, do so! e group seems to grow each week. You don't have to play, but the game is easy to learn. Try it! Of course, some people just come to visit and cheer on their friends, but everyone comes to have a good ol' time! What's not to love about Bocce? So, add ursdays from 4 to 6 pm to your calendar.
