14 | LIFE IN SOLERA | JUNE 2025 | Any county in California with warm, dry springs and summers, along with sufficient water availability, should be capable of producing apricots. Historically, apricot cultivation has thrived throughout the Central Valley and in inland valleys, such as the Santa Clara. Apricot trees bloom from early February to early March. Planting should occur in winter or early spring in well-draining soil. Utilizing native soil and adequate watering is recommended; fertilizers are generally unnecessary during the first year. Apricot trees require consistent irrigation throughout the growing season to maintain evenly moist soil. Ideally, apricot trees should be planted against south-, southwest-, or west-facing walls or fences, allowing for fan training and optimal heat and sun absorption. Given their early spring flowering, it is crucial to select a site that is not prone to heavy or late frosts, which can damage blossoms and reduce cropping. ~ Lina Lingen Solera backyard is home to a flourishing apricot tree
