| LIFE IN SOLERA | JUNE 2025 | 25 Thi & Tha By the Solera Ghostwriter Stars in your eyes? Light images entering the eye come in through the lens and are focused on the retina located at the back of the eyeball. On the retina there are two kinds of light-sensitive cells: cones that sense color and rods that sense brightness. Directly behind the lens, in the center of the field of vision, there are both rods and cones. But a few degrees away from the center, there are mostly rods, and these rods are more numerous and more densely packed than those at the center. This means that the area of the retina away from the center of the field of vision is more capable of detecting faint light images than those at dead center. Thus, when a very dim light comes in through the corner of the eye, it strikes these densely packed rods and is seen. But when the eye is turned directly toward the light source, the light strikes the central portion of the retina where there are fewer rods, and the object seems to vanish. what makes cowboy boots unique? There are three characteristics of cowboy boot that make them unique. These are the pointed toe, the high heel, and the wide unlaced top. The reasons for these are as follows: the pointed toe is to make it easy for the cowboy to insert his foot into the stirrup; the high heel is to enable his foot to get a firm hold on the stirrup; and the wide top is so the cowboy's foot can easily come out of his boot if he falls off his horse in such a way that his boot gets caught in the stirrup. why do onions make you cry? When a fresh onion is sliced, a gas called propanethiol-S is released into the air. When this gas reaches the eye, it mixes with the water in the eye to form a weak acid. This acid irritates the eye and causes the tear-producing glands to flood the eye with water in an attempt to wash away the irritant. The tears make it appear that the person slicing the onion is crying. why are brides on the left side of her groom? In the days when men often captured their brides from neighboring villages, a groom had to stay alert to the possibility of an attack by the bride's kinsmen or by jealous suitors. This made it necessary for the bridegroom to keep his right hand free during the ceremony to fend off any such attacks. This, of course, meant that the bride had to stand on his left.
