| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2025 | 5 Falls are the leading cause of injury among seniors. Factors such as poor balance, weakened muscles, and hazards in the home environment contribute to the risk. Here are some common fall hazards and ways to mitigate them: 1. Poor Lighting: Insucient lighting can make it dicult for seniors to see obstacles and navigate their home safely. Ensure that all areas, especially stairways and hallways, are well lit. Use nightlights in bedrooms and bathrooms to prevent a fall during late aernoon and nighttime hours. 2. Slippery Floors: Wet or slippery oors can lead to falls. Use non-slip mats in bathrooms and kitchens. Ensure that rugs are securely fastened to the oor or use non-slip backing. Clean up spills immediately to prevent accidents. 3. Lack of Handrails: Handrails provide support and stability, especially on stairs and in bathrooms. Install handrails on both sides of staircases and grab bars in bathrooms near toilets and showers. 4. Clutter: Clutter can create tripping hazards. Keep walkways clear of furniture, cords, and other obstacles. Keep your living spaces tidy and organized. 5. Uneven Surfaces: Uneven surfaces, such as thresholds and steps, can cause trips and falls. Use ramps to level out uneven surfaces and ensure that carpets and rugs lie at. 6. Furniture Arrangement: Poorly arranged furniture can obstruct pathways and create hazards. Arrange furniture to allow for easy movement and ensure that frequently used items are within reach. 7. Electrical Hazards: Faulty wiring and overloaded outlets can pose electrical hazards. Ensure that electrical cords are in good condition and are concealed so they are not a trip hazard. 8. Bathroom Safety: Bathrooms can be particularly hazardous due to wet surfaces. Use non-slip mats, install grab bars, and consider using a shower chair. Ensure that the water temperature is set to a safe level to prevent burns.
