THE CREATIVE SPOTLIGHT: NANCY WHITLEY I never considered myself an "artist." To me, being an artist meant someone who had gone to a university on an art scholarship or at least had taken extensive art classes when they were young. Most everyone I met had a background in art and I had no training, hadn't taken any classes and was just "messing around" sketching with my pencil. I was intimidated so didn't even start sketching till I was around 60 years old. I started with pencil drawing and found some videos to help me understand the principles and how to do certain things like depth and realistic eyes etc. en I discovered color pencils and bought a huge set of every color imaginable. It was fun to do things in color and see them develop from basic sketch to layering and adding details. en I discovered Zentangle drawing. A friend was doing this and brought her designs to show me, and I fell in love with the freedom and yet specic patterns done in this pen and ink style. I've done a lot of Zentangle drawings and when I'm stressed or just want to do something intuitive, I resort to Zentangle. Aer I moved to Four Seasons, I took a watercolor class that Virginia Melton was teaching in the Arts & Cras Room. is was right before Covid so aer a few classes everything shut down and ended that adventure. I decided to buy the tools and invested in a Kuretake watercolor set aer several trials with other cheaper brands. Of course I had to invest in watercolor brushes as well. Most of my art now is in watercolor as I found this to be challenging and interesting. Other art I've done includes, some acrylic, for a while I was doing custom leather, bead and feather masks, extremely time consuming, and a little bit of Pour Painting and I took a class on Alcohol Ink art by Vicki Allen-Hitt. I also attended a Diamond Painting class by Janis Zimmerman and have done several pieces including a custom one of one of my drawings, but I always revert to Watercolor as my main style. I have no interest in oil painting because brushes can't be cleaned up with water. I enjoy being creative and am happy to share some of my art, here, with you. | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | JUNE 2025 | 25 Four Seasons Creative Group Four Seasons Art Classes: Royce Jerman oers "Painting Pals" on Tuesdays 10 am to 1 pm and "Beading Buddies" on Wednesdays at 10 am to 1 pm in e Lodge.
