FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2025 67 Hooray for MEEEE! I won and you didn't, so nanner, nanner. Okay, this is not an expression of my pathological megalomania and it's not like I caught a big fish; it's really about the Club's Spring Tournament working the way the Committee had hoped. We wanted to have a tournament that would attract a lot of club members and to not automatically see the best players win. We were inspired by the mixed-doubles exhibition matches at the Indian Wells BNP Eisenhower Cup that was comprised of teams competing in a series of 10-point tiebreaker matches. But instead of fixed teams in a single elimination format, we used random assignment of partners and opponents which changed for each of the eight matches they played. Chuck Beckman used Guy Fieri's Randomizer to generate a complex chart of randomly selected mixed doubles teams, well mostly mixed because we had 11 women and 13 men players. Eventually, after everyone had played eight matches where the winning team had 10 points and the losing team got to count however many games that they won, Chuck's hieroglyphic spreadsheet showed that on the women's side, Tracy Mahan had accumulated 78 points (seven 10-pointers and one eight pointer). On the men's side, Steve Hovey, aged second-tier player that he is thanks to his eight women partners, also had 78 points to take home the Gold (labeled wine). Second place for the women was taken by Nancy Walker with 72 points, who was actually substituting for someone who had to drop out. Thekla Seigman also had 72 points and was awarded third place because Nancy had no losing score less than 7. For the men, second place was Darrell Imoe, 75 points, and Chuck, 71 points, came in third. Each received a less expensive bottle of wine. The Club is planning to have another tournament in lieu of a Play Day on Saturday, June 28. The format has not been determined yet, but a BBQ is going to be part of the event, so save the date. Time changes: Saturday FUNdamentals drills and gentle coaching will start at 8:30 am on Court 1. Regular last-Saturday-of- the-month Play Days will have sign-ins at 8 am and play beginning at 8:30 am during the summer months. Since we know that the temps will be rising soon, our group requested from the Facilities Committee that we get a replacement cover for the cabana at the putting green. The original cover that was installed last year took a beating from the winter winds and ended up in shreds. The installation of the new cover will be completed soon just in time for the expected rise in temperatures. As always, we'd love to see more ladies giving it a try as this is a low-impact, "high fun and very social" activity. The best part is no experience is necessary. We have extra putters and balls if you'd like to come out and give it a try. Our nine-hole putting green is located at The Courts, behind the pool area. Our putting days/times are Mondays at 4 pm and Fridays at 9 am. For more information, please contact Elaine Brown at (626) 589-9791 or Phyllis Kates at (909) 227-0037. ~ Phyllis Kates As spring arrived, it started getting warmer, making it perfect putting weather.
