12 | THE COLONY NEWS | JULY 2025 | Rebate Areas: We have sprayed out the turf on G46 (along Colony Dr.) and removed two sickly trees to prepare for renovation. Please get your maps of the G and W areas at Reception or at the Landscape Department Oce in the Clubhouse. Landscape Contractors: Questions as to how the contractors are using their time have come up. Please be aware the various crews have diering times for mandated breaks and lunch hours. Sometimes the crews are waiting for the truck to pick them up. We are condent that down time is kept to a minimum. As temperatures rise, OSHA and the Department of Labor monitor landscape companies to be sure employees have the following three provisions. 1. When the temperature is over 80 degrees, the employer must maintain areas of shade areas at all times for employee rest periods. 2. When the temperature is over 95 degrees (dangerous heat), or over 100 degrees (severe heat), the employer must ensure the employee takes a minimum 10 min. preventative cool- down rest period every two hours. 3. e employer (Environmental Concepts) is to observe employees for alertness and signs or symptoms of heat illness by direct supervisor observation; if fewer than 20 employees, a mandatory buddy system or regular communication with solo employees by radio or cell phone is required. e employer must designate one or more employees on each worksite as authorized to call for emergency medical services and allowing other employees to call if necessary. ey are to remind employees throughout the shi to drink plenty of water. Pre-shi meetings are held to review the high heat procedures, encouraging employees to drink plenty of water, and remind them of their right to take a cool-down rest when necessary. Environmental Concepts is very concerned about their employees' welfare, having hired an outside consultant to train, inspect, and consult on safety, and going above and beyond on all the safety procedures. So in the heat, if you see the crews taking frequent breaks, standing under your front yard trees for shade, or seeming to take forever to dig that trench, please understand what is happening. Mulch Pile: is mulch is for continuing the front yard mulch replenishments. Remember, this pile is not for residents to help themselves. Nor are the tubs the landscapers use to spread the mulch free for residents to take. Landscape Standards & Guidelines: e Landscape Standards and Guidelines printed in the new Colony Telephone Directory are not accurate, so please don't refer to them. We're still working on the Standards and Guidelines to eliminate resident confusion. Volunteer Opening: We have an opening on the Landscape Advisory Committee, because our long-time secretary, Yolanda Martinez, le us for an actual job at her church. We know she'll do an outstanding job there, too, and wish her the best! If you are interested in what is happening to e Colony landscape and would like to help, please contact Karl Gerlach (714) 746-5902 to learn what would be expected of you. We meet ocially once a month, every second Monday, 9 am in the Annex, but we have numerous ad hoc group meetings to design plantings, inspect trees, inspect front yards and greenbelt plants, etc. We do not actually plant things, dig holes, or chop down trees. We "advise"… because we are residents who live here and have a stake in e Colony's landscape looking nice for all of us. LANDSCAPE ADVISORY By Jan Foster, Chair, 951-698-0170
