38 | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2025 | Newbies, the official welcoming group for Ocean Hills Country Club residents, holds quarterly potlucks where new and established residents can meet and mingle. Our goal is to have you walk away with new friends and a feeling of community. Club membership is the fastest and best way for new residents to make friends and become involved in their new community. We encourage Newbies to join clubs and explore opportunities to be of service to others. Living in OHCC is truly a year-round summer camp and we're so glad you're here. This month, we are delighted to welcome two vibrant new members to our community: Cathy Carey and Mike Redman. They bring with them a rich tapestry of creativity, community spirit, and compassion. Cathy made the move to OHCC from La Costa last January, seeking deeper community ties and meaningful social connections in this new chapter of life. She is thrilled to have found a community of friends who share her interests in mindfulness, music, art, and yoga. She recently retired from her role as Director of Programming at Front Porch Gallery in Carlsbad to devote herself full time to her professional painting career. Her colorful, expressive works are represented by galleries in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, as well as Scottsdale and Tucson, Arizona. Her art can be viewed online at www.artstudiosandiego.com. Mike, a retired special education teacher, dedicated 22 years to the San Marcos School District. Though now a resident here, he also keeps a home in Cardiff. Mike is a professional musician and performs with his band Bucket Ruckus, well known in the Cardiff and Encinitas area. The band is especially beloved for their long-standing Halloween residency at The Lumberyard. Together, Cathy and Mike are deeply involved with the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project, a local nonprofit arts organization inspired by the iconic mosaic in Encinitas. Mike serves as the current President and leads the organization's special needs surf camps, bringing summer joy to over 200 children each year. Cathy, the former President and Executive Director, continues to play a vital role by facilitating art programs and curating the annual "Save the Ocean" art exhibit. Rounding out their household is their beloved rescue pup, Pookie Doo – a sweet Spring Spaniel/Dachshund mix. Pookie is loving her new yard and home, though she's still building trust with other dogs after a rough start in life. The last Newbies gathering was held in June, and we will provide an overview of that event next month. The next one is scheduled for Sept. 13, and details will be published well in advance.
