"July is a blind date with summer." - Hal Borland "July is hollyhocks, hammocks, reworks and vacations, hot and steamy weather, cool refreshing swims, and beach picnics." -Jean Hersey July marks the country's independence from Great Britain in 1776. America's Founding Fathers made good on their dreams of establishing one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. On that day the U.S. was freed from British rule and our Fourth of July was born. As I ref lect on this historical moment, I cannot help but feel pride and awe at my country's vision of freedom and for all who volunteered and fought for it. Looking out at the great Pacific, a Redtail Hawk glides effortlessly above the Redwoods reminding me of the strength of these ageless giant trees. It is not unlike the strength of this country that has endured for so many decades. In many ways, this resilience was dependent on the people who volunteered and fought to protect our freedoms. That inner need to help others has been a part of our heritage for centuries. Here at OHCC, volunteers have been the foundation for our multiple clubs and activities. Our library is no exception. In 1986, seven volunteers held their first meeting. Today we are blessed to have 35 trained librarians. We would like to welcome four new ladies to our team of 2025. Sheri Scott joined us from Riverside, California. She shared that she has always loved to read and her first experience here at OHCC was to find the Library. It was a place that seemed to welcome her immediately. She loved its fireplace and its peacefulness, and lovely furnishings. She felt at home. She wanted to be a part of this group and volunteered to do so. Sheri has degrees in Journalism and English. She taught high school where she was the sponsor for the newspaper. Later, she took a leadership role with her Teachers' Union and became an active voice. Our second volunteer is Linda Boone. She recently joined us from North Carolina where she was an Educator, Administrator and Teacher. Her voice showed excitement as she said, "I love moving to OHCC where it has such a vibrant library for all to enjoy." We also love having her join all of us and bringing that excitement to our team. Betty Davis and Connie Guttadauria will also be joining us this year. Stop by the library and welcome them. "Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or soened the ber of a free people." -Franklin D. Roosevelt Happy fourth of July to all of you!
