40 | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2025 | Finally! Summer is here and all our sailors are heading out to sea! As of May 31, the Sailing Club has completed 36 club sails, plus a First Mate training sail. Many of the Club's 276 members have already been out on the water. At the rate we are going, we will have well over 100 sailboats going out this year. On May 29, a record was set for the most sails going out at one time. There were five boats. This number has only been beat or exceeded by past years' regatta sails. There were five Captains, nine Mates, and 19 club members. Led by Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello, the boats sailed to Glorietta Bay, Coronado, where one by one in staggered formation they set anchor and tied up beam to beam. Once all were linked, all aboard enjoyed a brief but relaxing stay, hopping from boat to boat and sharing refreshments and snacks. After a while, the boats unlashed from each other; one by one, their Captains set courses for far reaching destinations in the harbor, some with plans to rejoin later for some hearty chowder and post sail repast. Social Director Laura Carlson is already hard at work on our Nov. 14 gala. Last year, Laura took us all back to the Prohibition era. This year, the Carlson time machine will be transporting us back to the 1950s where we will spend an evening in an old- fashioned "rock the coin right into the slot" diner. Please visit our website and see the sails scheduled for July and August. You can sign up for a sail even if you are not a member by paying a nominal guest fee. Please call our Fleet Captain if you would like to do this as part of deciding to join the Club. Lastly, I would like our readers to know how much I enjoyed writing the Sailing Club's monthly newsletter. As with all writers, some writings are better than others and I have my favorites tucked away in a safe place to be revisited from time to time. I hope you, too, have enjoyed them and perhaps picked a few favorites. Your feedback and compliments have been my reward. The Club is looking for a new reporter who will bring fresh ideas to the magazine, so stay tuned! May all of our club members and OHCC neighbors enjoy fair winds and following seas. Written by Commodore Skip Maniscalco and edited by Kathy C. Maniscalco Sailing Club Whiffleball The Whiffleball Group is a welcoming group of individuals who love baseball/softball. The atmosphere is one of friendly competition and shared enthusiasm. Membership is free! Whiffleball is a modified version of baseball/softball, played with a lightweight, perforated plastic ball and a plastic bat. The sport provides an enjoyable, easy-to-play alternative to traditional baseball/softball for players of all ages. Unlike traditional baseball/ softball, Whiffleball eliminates the need for physical bases and running, Whiffleball is a beloved sport that combines the simplicity of baseball/softball with unique elements that make it distinct and enjoyable. We play over the Over the Line style. Our game is played on a grassy area behind the Clubhouse, between the pickleball courts and the swimming pool. Instead, OTL focuses on batting prowess and strategic ball placement. Teams consist of three to four players: pitcher, catcher (if available), and two fielders. There are three outs per inning and seven innings per game unless the Mercy Rule is invoked or the one-hour time limit is met. Hitters try to hit a whiffleball over various lines to simulate singles, doubles, the elusive triple, and home runs. Fielders try to catch the ball before it crosses the designated lines. Whiffleball is not just a sport but a social event where friendships are forged, and memorable moments are shared. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a first-time player, the Whiffleball Group welcomes everyone to join in the fun and experience the thrill of the game. NEWCOMERS ARE WELCOME! We plan to play on Thursday mornings beginning in late August or early September after pickleball drop-in has finished. The first game will begin at 11:30 am. Each game has one-hour time limit regardless of the score. We usually play for six to eight weeks depending on the number of teams with a championship and pizza party. To sign up, ALL players need to contact the Commissioner, Rich Halkyard at redcisc@gmail.com. Written by:Rich Halkyard with the assistance of Microso Co-Pilot
